Engineering: Basins, Pumps & Drainage
The part of a water feature you never see is the part that determines whether it works reliably or becomes a maintenance headache. Every feature we build is engineered around three systems:
- Leak-proof basin/reservoir. Concealed below grade or behind masonry. Lined with EPDM or reinforced PVC membrane (not bare concrete, which cracks and leaks in San Diego’s expansive soils). Sized for the feature’s total water volume plus evaporation buffer. Access hatch for pump maintenance.
- Quiet variable-speed pump. We specify variable-speed pumps that let you dial the flow rate (and the sound level) up or down. A single-speed pump runs at one volume: loud or off. A variable-speed pump lets you set a gentle trickle for an evening dinner or a full curtain for daytime presence. It also uses 50-70% less energy than a single-speed running at full power.
- Overflow and drainage. Every basin has an overflow outlet routed to a lawful drainage point. This prevents flooding during heavy rain when the basin fills with stormwater on top of its recirculating volume. We also install an autofill valve (connected to irrigation supply) so the basin stays at operating level during San Diego’s dry months without manual refilling.

Our Water Feature Build Process
- Site consultation & vision. We discuss feature type, desired sound level, placement relative to seating and entertaining areas, and integration with walls, patio and lighting. We verify water supply location and electrical panel capacity. Budget range is aligned before design.
- Design (2D/3D renderings). Your Senior Designer creates the feature layout showing dimensions, wall/basin integration, stone selection, pump vault location and lighting fixtures. The feature is designed as part of the overall outdoor living plan, not as a standalone afterthought.
- Plumbing & electrical plan. Supply line routing (from irrigation or dedicated hose bib), drain/overflow routing to lawful outlet, pump circuit specification, and lighting circuit. Autofill valve location and wiring for smart pump control (if applicable).
- Permits. Electrical permit for dedicated pump and lighting circuits. If the feature is integrated with a retaining wall or structural element, the wall permit covers both. We handle all filing and inspection scheduling.
- Basin/reservoir construction. Excavation, compacted base, membrane lining, pump vault set, overflow pipe routed. For wall-integrated features (spillways, scuppers), the basin is constructed simultaneously with the masonry wall.
- Masonry & stone work. Spillway slots, scupper spouts, bubbler pedestals, waterfall rock placement, and veneer are built. Plumbing is run through the masonry with sealed penetrations.
- Pump, plumbing & electrical connection. Pump set in vault, supply and return plumbing connected, autofill valve installed, electrical terminated. Pump speed is adjusted to achieve the desired flow rate and sound level.
- Lighting & commissioning. Accent lighting fixtures installed and aimed. Feature is filled, run through multiple cycles, checked for leaks, and pump speed is fine-tuned with you on site to get the exact sound and visual effect you want.
Permits & Electrical
- Electrical permit: Required for dedicated pump circuits and new lighting circuits. We prepare the one-line diagram and load calculations and pull the permit.
- Building permit: Required when the water feature is integrated with a retaining wall, raised masonry wall or structural element that itself requires a permit. The water feature plumbing and basin are included in the wall permit package.
- Plumbing: Autofill connections to irrigation supply and overflow/drain routing to lawful outlet. In most jurisdictions, low-voltage recirculating features connected to irrigation supply do not require a separate plumbing permit, but we verify for your specific location.
- HOA/ARC: If your community requires architectural review, the water feature design (dimensions, materials, location, sound profile) is included in the ARC submittal package.
- Coastal/stormwater: In coastal zones, water feature overflow routing must comply with stormwater discharge standards. We design overflow to approved outlets and include stormwater notes in the permit package.
Materials & Finishes
- Basin/reservoir: EPDM or reinforced PVC membrane over compacted subgrade. Not bare concrete (which cracks in San Diego’s expansive clay soils and requires ongoing sealing).
- Pump: Variable-speed (standard on all our features). Submersible or external depending on feature type and access requirements. Energy-efficient, low-noise motor. Sized for head height and flow rate with 20% headroom.
- Masonry: CMU block or poured concrete core for wall-integrated features (spillways, scuppers). Stone or stucco veneer coordinated with adjacent patio and retaining walls.
- Stone: Natural boulder (pondless waterfalls, streams), fabricated rock (where weight or access is a constraint), basalt columns (bubblers), or cut stone (sheer descent walls). Selected for visual weight, water interaction and long-term durability.
- Spillway/scupper hardware: 316 stainless steel spillway blades, copper or stainless scupper spouts. Marine-grade in coastal zones.
- Plumbing: Schedule 40 PVC supply and return. Flexible PVC for connections. Check valves to prevent backflow. Unions at pump connections for easy service access.
- Lighting: Submersible LED fixtures (IP68 rated) for in-basin uplighting. Surface-mount LED accents for wall washing and spillway highlights. Warm white (2700K-3000K).

FAQs: San Diego Water Features
How much does a water feature cost in San Diego?
A compact bubbler or pillar fountain starts around $8k installed. Sheer descent spillways and scupper walls run $12k to $35k. Pondless waterfalls run $15k to $40k. Multi-element estate features range from $35k to $80k+. See our full cost and design guide.
Do water features waste water?
No. All our features are recirculating systems. The same water cycles continuously through the pump, feature and basin. Evaporation loss in San Diego’s climate is real but modest: an autofill valve connected to your irrigation supply keeps the basin topped off automatically. There is no continuous water consumption.
Are water features noisy?
They are exactly as loud as you want them to be. We install variable-speed pumps on every feature so you can dial the flow rate (and the sound level) from a gentle trickle to a full cascade. During commissioning, we tune the pump speed with you on site to hit the sound level that works for your space. Water features are also effective at masking unwanted noise from traffic, neighbors and HVAC equipment. See our Estate Privacy & Noise Control Guide.
What about mosquitoes?
Moving water does not breed mosquitoes. Stagnant, standing water does. All our features are recirculating with constantly moving water through the pump cycle. Pondless designs have no exposed standing water at all. There is no mosquito risk from a properly built recirculating water feature.
Do I need a permit for a water feature?
An electrical permit is required for the dedicated pump circuit. If the feature is integrated with a retaining wall or structural masonry that itself requires a building permit, the water feature plumbing and basin are included in that permit package. We handle all filing and inspections.
What maintenance does a water feature need?
Minimal. Variable-speed pumps are self-priming and run for years between service. The autofill valve handles evaporation automatically. Periodic maintenance includes cleaning the pump intake filter (quarterly), checking the basin level, and clearing any debris from the overflow. We provide a maintenance guide at close-out and your Live Project Tracker documentation shows exactly where the pump vault, valves and overflow are located for future access.
What is your On-Time Guarantee?
For projects $25k and above, we provide the only written on-time completion guarantee in San Diego County. If we cause a delay past the agreed completion window, we compensate you: $1,000 for one week late, $2,000 for two weeks, or 10% of the project cost for three or more weeks.
How long does a water feature take to build?
A standalone bubbler or scupper accent takes 3 to 5 days. A spillway wall or pondless waterfall takes 1 to 2 weeks. Multi-element features can take 2 to 3 weeks. When the feature is part of a larger project (integrated with patio, walls and lighting), basin and plumbing rough-in happen during hardscape construction, and the feature is commissioned at close-out.
Do you handle the full design and build?
Yes. We are a design-build firm. Your Senior Designer creates 2D/3D renderings showing the water feature integrated with your patio, walls, lighting and landscape. Our Project Manager oversees basin construction, plumbing, masonry, pump set and commissioning. Learn the difference between designer, architect and design-build.
