– Pavers: ORCO Mediterranean Express field tile, 416 pieces; ORCO Country Cobble 6×8, 15 pallets; ORCO Country Cobble 6×6, 15 pallets
– Joint material: NextGel Polymeric Sand, 50 lb bags (tan), quantity per field area
– Outdoor kitchen cabinets: Eldorado Outdoor Modular Cabinets – 2x 60-inch straight (30D x 36T x 60W), 1x 48-inch straight, 1x 24-inch straight, 2x 24-inch end caps
– Stone veneer: Eldorado-equivalent stone veneer panels, 114 sf
– Countertop: MSI stone slab (depth-corrected product, measured and cut by separate fabricator)
– Appliances: 8 built-in units (grill, refrigerator, access doors, drawers – exact models not documented in sheet)
– Lighting: 4x TS-HPL-6 warm-white paver lights; 100 lf 12/2 low-voltage wire
– Gas: 10 lf 3/4-inch gas line with tracer tape; 2x 3/4-inch gas line sweeps
– Drain: 30 lf 3-inch SDR35 pipe; 2x PVC 45/90 elbows; 4x 3-inch drain caps
– Base: Compacted aggregate base per ICPI specifications; concrete footing (12×12 with anchor strap) for kitchen structure

A 30-linear-foot run of 3-inch SDR35 pipe was installed under the paver field with two PVC elbows to route water to a collection point. Four drain caps were placed at surface level, including one inside the BBQ cabinet footprint. The paver field was graded to slope away from the house foundation, with a target of a minimum 6-inch drop within the first 10 feet of any impervious surface adjacent to a foundation.

A gas line extension of this scope (10 lf of 3/4-inch line for the outdoor kitchen island) typically requires a Simple MEP permit in San Diego. Per California Plumbing Code Chapter 12, underground gas piping is trenched to 18-inch depth with continuous tracer tape and the trench is held open for inspection before backfill. Two 3/4-inch sweeps were installed on this run.

The on-site construction window ran approximately 6 calendar weeks (30 working days), from June 18 to July 31, 2025. Paver installation was substantially complete in the first part of the build. Outdoor kitchen construction, countertop fabrication, and appliance fitting followed in the middle and final phases. A countertop stone product swap and fabricator scheduling extended the kitchen finish.

Project Story

Overview

On a flag-lot in Carmel Valley, a masonry BBQ had been crumbling along its footing for a decade. The homeowners had stopped using the patio entirely — the broken tile around the grill was a tripping hazard, and water pooled along the back wall every winter. The brief was a full rebuild: take the old BBQ out, set drainage under the new patio, and put a real cooking station against the back fence. Six weeks later, a 446-square-foot interlocking paver patio sits where the old structure used to, alongside a 16-foot Eldorado modular outdoor kitchen clad in stone veneer with eight built-in appliances. Paver lights and a 30-foot underground drain line finish the space.

The Challenge

  • The old masonry BBQ sat on a concrete footing that blocked the planned kitchen footprint, and the homeowners had no usable cooking area while the demo work was pending.
  • Water did not drain away from the patio reliably, leaving wet spots near the house after rain.
  • The existing patio surface was a mix of old tile and concrete set in mortar, which had to be cut out before pavers could be installed.

What Changed

446 square feet of new ORCO pavers replaced the old tile-and-concrete patio, and a 16-foot stone-veneer outdoor kitchen with eight built-in appliances replaced the demolished masonry structure. A 30-linear-foot underground drain system now moves surface water away from the foundation, and four paver lights activate the space after dark.
How Install It Direct Helped
The homeowners had lived with a crumbling backyard kitchen and drainage problems long enough that they wanted the whole area rebuilt, not patched. Install It Direct demolished 300 square feet of old tile and the existing masonry BBQ structure, then installed 446 square feet of ORCO pavers and a 16-foot outdoor kitchen island clad in stone veneer. A 30-linear-foot SDR35 drain line with four caps was set under the paver field to move surface water away from the house. Four in-paver lights came on at project close, and the gas line extension brought fuel to the new built-in grill and appliances. The homeowners now have a fully equipped outdoor cooking station they use every week.

Design & Build

The Plan

Project plan
  • Paver pattern: ORCO Mediterranean Express field tile (416 pieces) with ORCO Country Cobble 6×8 and 6×6 border units for a defined edge along the patio perimeter

  • Outdoor kitchen layout: three Eldorado modular cabinet sections (60-inch, 48-inch, and 24-inch) joined with end caps to form a continuous 16-foot island against the fence line

  • Stone veneer: 114 sf of Eldorado-equivalent stone veneer panels cladding the island base; MSI stone slab countertop selected after the original 2.5-inch product was swapped for a depth-appropriate alternative

  • Drainage: 30 lf of 3-inch SDR35 pipe with two PVC 45/90 elbows and four drain caps routed under the paver field to a collection point, sloped to drain away from the house

  • Gas extension: 10 lf of 3/4-inch gas line with tracer tape trenched 18 inches below grade to reach the kitchen island; two 3/4-inch sweeps installed

  • Lighting: 4 paver-inset TS-HPL-6 warm-white fixtures wired on 12/2 low-voltage cable

The Build

Build phases

Crew walked the site with Patrick Diehl to confirm drain locations, gas line routing, BBQ footprint, and excavation depth. Checklists signed before any material was delivered. The homeowner removed the existing BBQ unit independently before the start date.

Week 1: Crew demolished the masonry BBQ structure and concrete footing (70 sf) and removed approximately 300 sf of brick and tile set in mortar. Debris was loaded and hauled. Excavation confirmed the gas line position, and crew kept clear of it throughout.

After demo, the subgrade was excavated to depth, graded, and compacted. The 30-lf SDR35 drain line was set in trench with elbows and PVC risers positioned for drain cap placement. Backyard access surcharge applied for material staging through a constrained entry.

Starting in week 2, ORCO Mediterranean Express field pavers were laid across 446 sf in a running bond pattern. Country Cobble 6x8 and 6x6 units were set as a soldier-course perimeter border. Four TS-HPL-6 paver lights were integrated into the field during installation, with 100 lf of 12/2 low-voltage wire run in the bedding. NextGel polymeric sand was swept and activated to lock the field.

With the paver deck cured, the Eldorado modular cabinet bases were positioned and leveled. Stone veneer panels were applied to 114 sf of island surface. Eight appliance cutouts were made, and each appliance was set and fitted. The countertop fabricator measured on site after a stone depth issue was resolved, and the MSI slab was installed in the final phase of the build.

The 10-lf gas line extension was trenched, the 3/4-inch line with tracer tape was laid and inspected, and the two sweeps were connected. Drain caps were placed inside and around the BBQ area. Patrick verified water flow away from the house, countertop pitch, and appliance alignment before sign-off.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a paver patio with an outdoor kitchen cost in Carmel Valley San Diego?

Projects of this type in Carmel Valley run roughly $28,000 to $35,000. This project included 446 sf of ORCO pavers, a 16-foot modular outdoor kitchen with eight built-in appliances and stone veneer, underground drainage, four paver lights, and a gas line extension. Kitchen size and appliance count are the biggest cost drivers.

Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen gas line in San Diego?

Yes. A gas line permit is required in San Diego for any new gas supply run to an outdoor appliance. A new underground extension of this type typically requires a Simple MEP permit; for this project, the gas line was pulled through standard channels. California Plumbing Code Chapter 12 requires the line to be buried at least 18 inches with tracer tape, and the trench must stay open for inspection before backfill.

How is drainage handled under a paver patio near the house?

On this project, 30 linear feet of 3-inch SDR35 pipe was set under the paver field with PVC elbows and four surface drain caps, including one inside the kitchen cabinet footprint. The paver surface was graded to slope away from the foundation, with a target of a minimum 6-inch drop in the first 10 feet away from the structure.

What maintenance does an outdoor kitchen with stone veneer require?

Stone veneer panels are low-maintenance: wipe down with a damp cloth and re-seal the countertop annually if it is a natural stone slab. Stainless steel appliances benefit from a stainless cleaner a few times a year. The ORCO paver field should be inspected every year or two for joint sand loss; a fresh sweep of polymeric sand every few years keeps the field locked.

How long does it take to install a paver patio and outdoor kitchen in San Diego?

The on-site construction window for this project was approximately 6 calendar weeks (30 working days). Paver installation wrapped in the first part of the build. A product substitution on the countertop stone added time to the kitchen phase.

What ORCO pavers work well for a backyard patio in San Diego?

This project used ORCO Mediterranean Express as the field tile with ORCO Country Cobble 6x8 and 6x6 units as a border. The Mediterranean Express pattern in tan and brown tones suits the style common in Carmel Valley homes, and the Country Cobble border gives the slab a defined edge without cutting field pavers.
