A 292 sf Belgard Melville segmental wall holds the new grade, and matching pavers carry through to the front entry.

The Challenge

  • Patchy lawn eroding on the slope where 1,663 sf of Belgard Dimensions 18 pavers and 292 sf of Melville segmental walls now sit, leaving the yard unusable most of the year.

The finished backyard now holds 1,663 sf of Belgard interlocking pavers across a terraced layout, a 418 sf covered pergola with four recessed lights, a built-in outdoor kitchen with concrete countertops, and a natural gas fire pit. The front yard entry was also rebuilt with Dimensions 18 pavers and Melville wall segments, replacing the patchy concrete-and-grass approach with a defined hardscape corridor.

The Encinitas Ranch lot had every problem at once: a dying patch of lawn on a slope, no shade over the kitchen window at five o'clock, runoff already eating into the foundation. The Build

Demo and Excavation

Crew removed existing lawn, shrubs, and an old wall footing (75 sf demolition) across the backyard and front entry areas. Approximately 2.5 yards of soil and 1.5 small loads of organic debris were hauled off. Side-yard trenching for gas line and drain pipe began in the same phase.

Gas Line and Conduit Rough-In

88 lf of 1-inch gas line were trenched, laid with tracer tape, and connected at four points including the meter stub-out and the fire pit location. Gas line routing was verified with a plumbing contact before final placement. 58 lf of electrical conduit sleeve were also placed in the subgrade before base material was spread.

Retaining Walls and Steps

Melville segmental wall blocks were set in lifts to create the retaining structure (292 sf face) along the rear and side elevations, with 46 lf of French drain pipe and clean aggregate placed behind the wall as backfill. Country Manor steps (52 lf) were built at the grade transition. Melville caps (134 lf) went on after wall courses were complete.

Paver Base and Installation

Crushed aggregate base was spread and compacted across the paver field. Bedding sand was screeded to a consistent 1-inch layer per base prep standards before pavers were set. Dimensions 18 (1,285 sf) and Catalina Grana Large (378 sf) were installed across the patio and front entry areas, with 18 Moduline 24x24 stepping stones set in the turf zone and 28 lf of paver-on-edge edging at the mowstrip. NextGel polymeric sand was applied for joint fill.

Outdoor Kitchen and Pergola

The L-shape kitchen island carcass was built from concrete block and veneered with Melville stacked stone. A concrete countertop was poured in place using wood forms and a mechanical mixer. Appliance cutouts were made for four appliances including the built-in grill and refrigeration drawer. The 418 sf insulated pergola was set on two attached concrete footings; four recessed LED lights and electrical hookup were completed after the structure was positioned.

Fire Pit, Lighting, and final checks

The natural gas fire pit with an 18-inch double-ring stainless steel burner was finished and connected to the gas line. Lava stones were placed in the fire bowl. All 14 LL2 ledge lights and 6 SL2 step lights were wired back to the 150W transformer. Paver haze was cleaned and 15 existing sprinkler heads were relocated to clear the new hardscape footprint.
