An Encinitas Backyard Built for Evenings
Project Gallery
The lower patio seating area: 1,663 sf of Belgard Dimensions 18 pavers and 18 Moduline stepping stones set in artificial turf, with the teak sectional gathered around the gas fire pit at five o'clock.
Eighteen stepping stones create a clean modern path through synthetic turf, connecting the home's sliding door to the pergola-covered entertaining space.
The modern L-shaped kitchen features a poured concrete countertop, Melville stone veneer tile, and built-in stainless appliances in this Encinitas backyard.
Low-maintenance synthetic turf ties together the modern outdoor living zones, complementing the composite deck steps and teak furniture.

Project Story
Overview
Laid 1,663 sf of Belgard Dimensions 18 pavers across a re-graded terraced Encinitas Ranch backyard and anchored it with a 418 sf insulated pergola, an L-shape outdoor kitchen with poured concrete counter, and a natural gas fire pit. A 292 sf Belgard Melville segmental wall holds the new grade, and matching pavers carry through to the front entry.
The backyard finally feels like the place we want to spend evenings.
The Challenge
- Patchy lawn eroding on the slope where 1,663 sf of Belgard Dimensions 18 pavers and 292 sf of Melville segmental walls now sit, leaving the yard unusable most of the year.
- The slope drained toward the foundation with no catch or redirect — no SDR35 line, no French drain — before this build.
- The front entry had no defined hardscape to tie into the concrete driveway, making the approach read unfinished.

Design & Build
The Plan
Layout planned across two elevations: a primary hardscape terrace at grade level and a turf-and-stepping-stone zone above the retaining wall, connected by Country Manor steps
Belgard Dimensions 18 (3-piece) pavers installed across 1,285 sf in the main field; Belgard Catalina Grana Large used for accent areas totaling 378 sf
Belgard Melville segmental wall blocks selected for both the retaining walls (292 sf, 134 lf cap) and as the veneer material for the L-shape outdoor kitchen island
French drain (46 lf, 3-inch perforated triplewall with sleeve) installed behind the new retaining wall; 68 lf of 3-inch SDR35 solid drain line routes surface runoff to exits
Low-voltage lighting system : 14 Pro-Trade LL2 ledge lights, 6 Pro-Trade SL2 step lights, one 150W Pro-Trade TR1 transformer, and a smart socket timer
58 lf of electrical conduit sleeve run under the paver field during base prep to feed pergola power and outdoor kitchen circuits

The Build
Demo and Excavation
Crew removed existing lawn, shrubs, and an old wall footing (75 sf demolition) across the backyard and front entry areas. Approximately 2.5 yards of soil and 1.5 small loads of organic debris were hauled off. Side-yard trenching for gas line and drain pipe began in the same phase.
Gas Line and Conduit Rough-In
88 lf of 1-inch gas line were trenched, laid with tracer tape, and connected at four points including the meter stub-out and the fire pit location. Gas line routing was verified with a plumbing contact before final placement. 58 lf of electrical conduit sleeve were also placed in the subgrade before base material was spread.
Retaining Walls and Steps
Melville segmental wall blocks were set in lifts to create the retaining structure (292 sf face) along the rear and side elevations, with 46 lf of French drain pipe and clean aggregate placed behind the wall as backfill. Country Manor steps (52 lf) were built at the grade transition. Melville caps (134 lf) went on after wall courses were complete.
Paver Base and Installation
Crushed aggregate base was spread and compacted across the paver field. Bedding sand was screeded to a consistent 1-inch layer per base prep standards before pavers were set. Dimensions 18 (1,285 sf) and Catalina Grana Large (378 sf) were installed across the patio and front entry areas, with 18 Moduline 24x24 stepping stones set in the turf zone and 28 lf of paver-on-edge edging at the mowstrip. NextGel polymeric sand was applied for joint fill.
Outdoor Kitchen and Pergola
The L-shape kitchen island carcass was built from concrete block and veneered with Melville stacked stone. A concrete countertop was poured in place using wood forms and a mechanical mixer. Appliance cutouts were made for four appliances including the built-in grill and refrigeration drawer. The 418 sf insulated pergola was set on two attached concrete footings; four recessed LED lights and electrical hookup were completed after the structure was positioned.
Fire Pit, Lighting, and final checks
The natural gas fire pit with an 18-inch double-ring stainless steel burner was finished and connected to the gas line. Lava stones were placed in the fire bowl. All 14 LL2 ledge lights and 6 SL2 step lights were wired back to the 150W transformer. Paver haze was cleaned and 15 existing sprinkler heads were relocated to clear the new hardscape footprint.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a paver patio with outdoor kitchen cost in Encinitas?
This Encinitas project with 1,663 sf of Belgard interlocking pavers, an L-shape outdoor kitchen with concrete countertops, and a 418 sf insulated pergola landed in the $80,000 to $95,000 range fully installed. Scope drivers include kitchen complexity, wall square footage, gas line length, and drainage requirements. Paver-only projects without a kitchen or pergola typically run $20 to $35 per sf installed.
Do I need a permit for a gas fire pit or outdoor kitchen in Encinitas?
Yes. A gas line for an outdoor fire feature typically requires a Simple MEP permit under the California Plumbing Code, with the line trenched at proper depth and continuous tracer tape installed. On this project, 88 lf of gas line connected at four points including the meter and fire pit. Retaining walls over 3 feet in San Diego typically require a building permit per City (verify with your local building department and your project's grading plan for the requirements that apply to your site).
How is drainage handled under a paver patio on a sloped Encinitas lot?
This project installed 68 lf of 3-inch SDR35 solid drainpipe for surface water collection and 46 lf of French drain pipe (3-inch perforated triplewall with filter sleeve) directly behind the new retaining wall to relieve hydrostatic pressure. Twelve drain caps connect downspouts and collection points to the system. Paved surfaces were graded so surface water drains away from the house toward approved exits.
How long does a backyard paver and pergola project take in Encinitas?
This project ran approximately 12 weeks from first dig to final completion. That timeline included retaining wall construction, gas line rough-in, pergola delivery and setting, kitchen countertop pour, and lighting wire-out across front and back yard areas. Projects with fewer structural elements typically complete in 4 to 6 weeks.
What pavers were used for this Encinitas backyard?
The primary field used Belgard Dimensions 18 in the 3-piece pattern across 1,285 sf, with Belgard Catalina Grana Large installed in accent areas for an additional 378 sf. Belgard Moduline 24x24 stepping stones were set in the turf zone. All joints were filled with NextGel polymeric sand in gray. The outdoor kitchen and retaining walls used Belgard Melville block and cap throughout for a consistent material palette.
What low-voltage lighting was installed on this project?
The lighting system includes 14 Pro-Trade LL2 7-inch ledge lights, 6 Pro-Trade SL2 9-inch surface-mounted LED step lights, a 150W Pro-Trade TR1 stainless steel transformer, and a smart socket timer for automatic scheduling. All wiring runs from a single 250 lf roll of 12/2 low-voltage wire. The system was installed and wired for low-voltage landscape lighting.
What's included in the $80,000 to $95,000 range for this Encinitas project?
The $80,000 to $95,000 range covers all hardscape (1,663 sf of Belgard Dimensions 18 pavers plus 18 Moduline stepping stones), 292 sf of Melville segmental retaining wall with 134 lf of cap, 52 lf of Country Manor steps, the 418 sf insulated pergola with four recessed LED lights, the L-shape outdoor kitchen carcass with Melville stone veneer and poured concrete countertop with four appliance cutouts, the natural gas fire pit with 88 lf of trenched gas line at four connection points, 68 lf of SDR35 drain and 46 lf of French drain pipe, the low-voltage lighting system (14 ledge lights, 6 step lights, transformer, timer), demo and excavation, and all site work. Component-level cost ranges in the estimator below show category breakdowns; the full project investment landed in the $80,000 to $95,000 range fully installed (excludes sales tax, permit fees, design hours, and photography).
