The hardscape — pavers, the turf panel, and the sub-three-foot Belgard Melville seat and planter walls — did not require permits. The permitting on this build came from the utilities. The natural-gas fire pit and the gas line feeding the 20-foot outdoor kitchen fall under a City of Carlsbad gas and plumbing permit, quoted separately from the gas-line scope, while the line-voltage electrical conduit run under the paver base falls under an electrical permit; the low-voltage landscape lighting does not. Because the build included an 18-inch gas trench, DIG Alert (811) utility locating was required before excavation. No HOA was documented for this property.

The work moved from concrete removal and site prep into drainage and utility routing, paver installation, wall and fire-feature construction, outdoor kitchen work, turf, lighting and finish items.

Project Story

Overview

An inland Carlsbad backyard rebuilt around an existing white pergola: a 20-foot L-shaped outdoor kitchen anchored on the pergola's east post, a natural-gas fire pit six feet south, 1,468 sf of Belgard Catalina Grana paver in Rio, a 286 sf turf inset, and the drainage, gas and conduit no one will ever see.

The Challenge

  • The original patio and walkway were smaller concrete surfaces bordered by lawn and planting areas.
  • The yard needed drainage and utility routing before the new pavers, turf, fire feature and outdoor kitchen could be finished.
  • The cooking area, fire feature, seat wall, turf and side-yard pavers needed to fit around the existing house and shade structure.

What Changed

The finished backyard replaces older concrete and grass with 1,468 sq ft of pavers, a 286 sq ft turf panel, seat-wall areas, a natural gas fire pit and an outdoor kitchen. Drainage, gas, electrical conduit and low-voltage lighting are built into the new layout.
How INSTALL-IT-DIRECT Helped
In an inland Carlsbad backyard, an existing white pergola was the one thing the homeowners would not give up. Everything around it had to go: a stained concrete patio, a tired strip of natural grass, a low planter wall that no longer held its line. The brief was simpler than it sounded — keep the pergola, build the cooking around it. A 20-foot L-shaped outdoor kitchen now sits under the pergola's east end, finished in stone veneer with concrete counters poured on site. Six feet south, a natural-gas fire pit anchors the seating zone in black tumbled lava stone. Between them, 1,468 square feet of Belgard Catalina Grana paver in Rio, a turf inset, and the wiring no one will ever see.

Over 1,000 five-star reviews and 1,500+ San Diego homeowners served.

Design & Build

The Plan

  • 1,468 sf Belgard Catalina Grana pavers in Rio color cover the main patio and connected hardscape.

  • 148 sf Belgard Melville segmental wall with Graphite cap defines the seat-wall and planter-wall edges.

  • 286 sf rectangular artificial turf panel bordered by the paver field gives the center yard a clean lawn frame.

  • Natural gas fire pit finished with black tumbled lava stone, set against the seating zone.

  • 20 ft L-shaped outdoor kitchen with poured concrete counters and appliance cutouts, fed by a trenched gas line and electrical conduit run under the paver base.

  • SDR35 drainage routed through the field and 17 Pro-Trade ledge lights wired through the wall caps for evening use.

The Build

Concrete removal and site prep

The crew removed existing concrete, wall and footing sections, then cleared soil and vegetation from the work areas.

Drainage, gas and conduit routing

Drainline, downspout connections, gas routing and electrical conduit were placed before the finish surfaces went in.

Base preparation and pavers

The patio areas were graded and based, then the Belgard Catalina pavers were installed across the main patio and side-yard areas.

Walls, fire feature and outdoor kitchen

Melville wall material, the natural gas fire pit and the L-shaped outdoor kitchen structure were built into the paver layout.

Turf, lighting and finish work

The final phase added the artificial turf panel, ledge lighting, polymeric sand and concrete counters.
