Constraints/Challenges The backyard combined older concrete, a lawn panel, seat-wall work, drainage routing, gas-line routing and an existing pergola footprint inside a residential yard.

Goals Replace older concrete and natural grass with a larger paver surface, a turf panel, a fire feature and a built-in cooking area. Add drainage, gas and lighting so the finished layout worked as one backyard plan.

Scope 1,468 sq ft Belgard Catalina pavers, 286 sq ft artificial turf, 148 sq ft Melville wall, a 20 ft L-shaped outdoor kitchen, natural gas fire pit, drainage, gas line and 17 ledge lights.

Timeline About 8 build weeks

Price Range $70k-$85k

The Challenge

  • The original patio and walkway were smaller concrete surfaces bordered by lawn and planting areas.
  • The yard needed drainage and utility routing before the new pavers, turf, fire feature and outdoor kitchen could be finished.
  • The cooking area, fire feature, seat wall, turf and side-yard pavers needed to fit around the existing house and shade structure.

How Install It Direct Helped

Install It Direct removed existing concrete and prepared the backyard for a larger hardscape plan. The crew installed Belgard pavers, Melville wall and cap material, artificial turf, SDR35 drainage, gas routing, low-voltage lighting, a natural gas fire pit and a 20 ft L-shaped outdoor kitchen structure.

Market Context

This price range reflects a combined paver, outdoor kitchen, wall, turf and utility scope, not a single-surface patio.

Neighborhood Context

Inland Carlsbad yards often benefit from durable hardscape, drainage planning and lower-water turf areas.

Over 1,000 five-star reviews and 1,500+ San Diego homeowners served.

The Plan

Project plan
  • Belgard Catalina Grana pavers in Rio color for the main patio and connected hardscape areas.

  • Melville wall and Graphite cap material for the seat-wall and planter-wall areas.

  • A rectangular artificial turf panel bordered by pavers for a cleaner center yard.

  • A natural gas fire pit with black tumbled lava stone and nearby seating zone.

  • A 20 ft L-shaped outdoor kitchen structure with concrete counters and appliance cutouts.

  • SDR35 drainage, gas line, electrical conduit and low-voltage ledge lights routed through the build.

The Build

The crew removed existing concrete, wall and footing sections, then cleared soil and vegetation from the work areas.

Drainline, downspout connections, gas routing and electrical conduit were placed before the finish surfaces went in.

The patio areas were graded and based, then the Belgard Catalina pavers were installed across the main patio and side-yard areas.

Melville wall material, the natural gas fire pit and the L-shaped outdoor kitchen structure were built into the paver layout.

The final phase added the artificial turf panel, ledge lighting, polymeric sand and concrete counters.

The Result

The finished backyard replaces older concrete and grass with 1,468 sq ft of pavers, a 286 sq ft turf panel, seat-wall areas, a natural gas fire pit and an outdoor kitchen. Drainage, gas, electrical conduit and low-voltage lighting are built into the new layout.
