Project Story
Overview
IID transformed a bare soil backyard into a curved 607 sq ft paver patio with flagstone-pattern Belgard pavers, retaining walls, and integrated drainage - completed in about 2.5 weeks with perfect access and no complications.
The Challenge
- The backyard was mostly bare soil with no usable hardscape surface for entertaining or outdoor activities
- The existing yard had drainage concerns that needed to be addressed during the renovation
- The space lacked defined outdoor living areas and proper transitions between different zones

The Build
Excavation and Base Preparation
Demo of existing conditions followed by 7.5-inch excavation depth for paver installation. Native soils compacted to proper density with fabric installed against walls to prevent sub base material from slipping into wall cracks.
Drainage and Infrastructure
Installation of 3-inch SDR35 drain line with PVC pop-up drain and elbow fittings. Drainage system coordinated with paver excavation and base preparation phases.
Paver Installation and Finishing
Delivery and installation of Belgard Mega Arbel and Dimensions border pavers. Mow strip installation with concrete setting. NextGel polymeric sand application and final surface preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a 607 sq ft paver patio cost in El Cajon?
Based on this Bostonia project, a curved flagstone paver patio of this size with drainage and retaining walls invested approximately $17,000-$21,000. The final cost depends on paver selection, drainage requirements, site access, and additional features like mow strips or walls.
Do I need permits for a paver patio in El Cajon?
Paver patios at grade typically don't require building permits. However, this project included retaining walls which may require permits if over 3 feet in height. Drainage connections and grading over 200 cubic yards may also trigger permit requirements.
How does polymeric sand help with paver maintenance?
NextGel polymeric sand used in this project hardens when activated with water, creating stable joints that resist weed growth and ant infiltration. It provides better long-term performance than regular masonry sand while maintaining flexibility for thermal movement.
What's the advantage of Belgard Mega Arbel pavers over other options?
Mega Arbel pavers provide a natural flagstone appearance with the durability and consistency of manufactured concrete pavers. The 60mm thickness provides excellent strength, while the random flagstone pattern creates visual interest without the maintenance issues of natural stone.
How long does paver patio installation take in El Cajon?
This 607 sq ft curved patio with drainage took 17 build days to complete. Timeline depends on total square footage, excavation depth, drainage complexity, and site conditions. Perfect access contributed to faster completion on this project.
