Turf, River Rock & Pavers: Carlsbad Front Yard

This finished project was a $16k-$18k build.

Project Snapshot

Location La Costa, Carlsbad (92024)
Style Modern
Timeline about two weeks
Price Range $16k-$18k

– Pavers: Angelus Courtyard Combo 60mm, 242 sq ft, jointed with NextGel polymeric sand – Paver-on-edge border (Weston Wall style) set in concrete, 71 ln ft – Artificial turf: Imperial Desert Rye 65, 223 sq ft, SGW Envirofill infill – Decorative rock: AZ River Rock 3/4 in to 1-1/2 in, 334 sq ft over weed barrier – Plantings: seven 5-gallon and two 15-gallon shrubs in amended top soil – Irrigation: drip valve with pressure regulator; ten existing sprinkler lines capped

Surface water is managed by grading and planting rather than a piped drain. A drip valve with pressure regulator feeds the new shrubs through buried drip line, and ten existing spray sprinklers were capped to cut water use across the converted beds.

Install ran about two weeks. Demo and grading came first, followed by the paver walkway and border, then turf, river rock, planting, and the side-yard pavers.

Project Story

Overview

A Carlsbad front yard of bare dirt and a loose-gravel side path became a low-water landscape with artificial turf, decorative river rock, new plantings, and a paver walkway. A curved paver-on-edge border holds the turf and rock beds, and drip irrigation replaced the old spray sprinklers. The install ran about two weeks.

The Challenge

  • The front yard had died back to bare, compacted dirt between the two driveways, so the home had no greenery or curb appeal from the street.
  • The side-yard corridor was loose gravel and wobbly stepping stones, making the walk to the back gate uneven and hard to keep tidy.
  • The old lawn still ran on spray sprinklers that watered bare soil, wasting water on a yard that had nothing left to grow.

What Changed

A bare-dirt driveway island and a loose-gravel side yard are now a low-water front landscape: 223 sq ft of artificial turf, 334 sq ft of AZ river rock beds, and a 242 sq ft Angelus Courtyard paver walkway with a 71 ln ft paver-edge border. New 5- and 15-gallon plantings on drip irrigation frame the entry, and the side-yard corridor is finished in matching interlocking pavers.

How INSTALL-IT-DIRECT Helped

The homeowner's Carlsbad front yard had died back to bare dirt between two driveways, and they wanted a low-water landscape with artificial turf that stayed green with almost no upkeep. Install It Direct rebuilt the driveway island as a curved turf lawn edged in AZ river rock, then laid a 242 sq ft Angelus Courtyard paver walkway and entry pads. A 71 ln ft paver-on-edge border holds the turf and rock, new shrubs went in on drip irrigation, and the side-yard corridor was resurfaced in matching pavers. Now the turf stays green without a sprinkler, the river-rock beds and plantings frame the entry, and the side path is a clean, dry walk to the back gate.

Over 1,000 five-star reviews and 1,500+ San Diego homeowners served.

Before & After

Before: the front-yard island was bare, compacted soil ringed by the home's circular driveway.

Design & Build

The Plan

  • Curved artificial-turf lawn (223 sq ft Imperial Desert Rye 65) shaped to the teardrop driveway island, infilled with SGW Envirofill and pinned along the edges.

  • AZ river rock (334 sq ft, 3/4 in to 1-1/2 in) over weed barrier fills the planting beds and rings the turf for a low-water, no-mow finish.

  • Angelus Courtyard Combo pavers (242 sq ft, 60mm) set the front walkway and entry pads, jointed with NextGel polymeric sand.

  • Paver-on-edge border set in concrete (71 ln ft, Weston Wall style) restrains the turf and rock beds and defines the bed edges.

  • Drip irrigation valve with pressure regulator feeds seven 5-gallon and two 15-gallon shrubs; ten existing sprinkler lines were capped.

  • Interlocking pavers resurface the narrow side-yard corridor past the condenser and gas meter, replacing loose gravel and stepping stones.

The Build

Demo and Site Prep

The crew cleared the dead lawn and bare soil across the front yard, pulled roots and shrubs, and hauled the debris off site. Grades were reset and the base prepared before any surfacing began.

Pavers and Border

The Angelus Courtyard paver walkway and entry pads went in over a compacted base, jointed with polymeric sand. A paver-on-edge border was set in concrete around the turf and planting beds to lock the edges.

Turf, River Rock, and Planting

The crew laid 223 sq ft of artificial turf on the driveway island, infilled and pinned it, then spread AZ river rock over weed barrier in the surrounding beds. Drip irrigation was run to the new 5- and 15-gallon shrubs and the old sprinklers were capped. The side-yard corridor was finished in interlocking pavers to match the front.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an artificial turf and paver front yard cost in Carlsbad?

Projects like this in Carlsbad typically run about $15,000 to $18,000. This one included 242 sq ft of Angelus pavers, 223 sq ft of artificial turf, 334 sq ft of decorative river rock, drip irrigation, and new shrubs. Paver and turf square footage, rock coverage, and the number of plants are the biggest cost drivers.

Can I put artificial turf in a front yard with an HOA in Carlsbad?

In California, HOAs generally cannot ban artificial turf outright, though they may set reasonable appearance standards. Many North County homeowners convert front lawns to turf and low-water plantings to cut water use. Verify current requirements with a licensed contractor or attorney.

Why use river rock and drip irrigation instead of a full lawn?

Decorative rock beds and drip-fed shrubs keep a front yard green and defined while using far less water than turf grass. Here, 334 sq ft of AZ river rock and drip-irrigated plantings frame a smaller artificial-turf lawn, so the yard reads lush from the street but costs little to run.

How do I maintain artificial turf and river rock in a front yard?

Artificial turf needs an occasional rinse to clear dust and a brush to keep the blades upright, with no mowing or watering. River rock over a weed barrier stays put with solid edging and only needs periodic raking. The drip-irrigated shrubs use a fraction of the water a lawn would.

How long does a front-yard turf and paver install take in Carlsbad?

A project this size runs about two weeks on site once demo starts. Grading and demo come first, then the paver walkway and border, and finally turf, river rock, and planting. Access and the amount of demolition and hauling affect the schedule most.
