Project Story

Overview

A Carmel Valley homeowner replaced the existing pool deck and surrounding patio with 1,750 sf of interlocking pavers in a modular ashlar pattern, added a natural gas fire pit, a 10-foot BBQ island, new pool coping, and a channel drain system. The project coordinated multiple trade crews including pool, electrical, and hardscape to deliver a fully finished outdoor living space.

The Challenge

  • The existing pool deck surface was worn and lacked the durability and finished appearance needed for a high-use outdoor space.
  • The backyard had no dedicated cooking or gathering area, limiting the homeowner's ability to entertain outdoors.
  • Without a channel drain along the deck perimeter, surface water management around the pool was inadequate.

What Changed

The finished backyard covers 1,750 sf of interlocking pavers wrapping the pool, spa, and patio in a modular ashlar pattern. A 10-foot stone-veneer BBQ island and natural gas fire pit occupy the outer deck, and pour-in-place cantilever coping with blue waterline tile completes the pool perimeter. Where there was a plain concrete deck, the space now functions as a connected outdoor kitchen, lounge, and fire-pit area.
How INSTALL-IT-DIRECT Helped
The homeowner needed a full pool-area overhaul that required tight coordination between hardscape, pool, gas, and electrical trades. Install It Direct managed the sequencing from demo through paver installation, aligning the deck removal with the pool subcontractor's drain-and-restart schedule so neither trade blocked the other. The crew installed 1,750 sf of interlocking pavers in a modular ashlar pattern, poured cantilever coping, set waterline tile, built a 10-foot stone-veneer BBQ island with gas and electrical connections, and placed a natural gas fire pit on the finished deck. By the time trades cleared the site, the backyard had a connected pool, spa, fire feature, and full outdoor kitchen ready for use.

Over 1,000 five-star reviews and 1,500+ San Diego homeowners served.

Design & Build

The Plan

  • 1,750 sf of interlocking pavers in a modular ashlar pattern, light-colored concrete units with staggered rectangular courses around the freeform pool and spa

  • Pour-in-place cantilever concrete pool coping with blue waterline tile running the pool perimeter at approximately $20 per linear foot installed

  • Natural gas fire pit with 18-inch double-ring stainless steel burner, built with concrete block and stucco or stackable block finish, positioned on the paver deck

  • 10-foot BBQ island with stone veneer face and precast concrete countertop, connected to a dedicated gas line and electrical circuit

  • Channel drain system (10 four-foot plastic sections, pedestrian-rated) integrated into the paver field to manage deck surface drainage per CRC R401.3 slope requirements

  • Polymeric sand joint fill throughout the 1,750 sf paver field for weed resistance and joint stability

The Build

Site Setup and Demo

Existing pool deck and coping were removed. Concrete rubble was hauled from the site. Demo timing was aligned with the pool subcontractor's drain date so the pool was empty and ready for coping installation when the hardscape crew completed removal.

Pool Coping and Waterline Tile

Pour-in-place cantilever concrete coping was formed and poured around the freeform pool perimeter. Waterline tile was set by the pool trade in coordination with the hardscape schedule.

Paver Base and Installation

Base material was compacted and screeded to receive the interlocking paver field. Approximately 1,750 sf of large-format concrete pavers were laid in a modular ashlar pattern around the pool, spa, and patio area. Channel drain sections were integrated into the field during installation.

BBQ Island and Fire Pit

The 10-foot BBQ island was built with a stone veneer face and precast concrete countertop. Gas line and electrical circuits were run to the island and to the fire pit location. The natural gas fire pit with stainless steel double-ring burner was set on the completed deck.

Finishing and Final Checks

Polymeric sand was swept and activated across the full paver field. Pool coping surfaces were cleaned. Grout work was completed by the pool trade. All gas, electrical, and hardscape connections were verified before the project was closed out.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a pool deck paver renovation with a BBQ island cost in Carmel Valley, San Diego?

A similar project in Carmel Valley covering 1,750 sf of interlocking pavers, a 10-foot BBQ island with gas and electrical, a natural gas fire pit, and new pool coping would typically run $69,000 to $85,000. Scope complexity, island size, and the number of trade connections (gas, electrical, pool) are the main cost drivers. Smaller paver-only pool decks without kitchen features can come in well under that range.

Do I need a permit for a pool deck paver replacement or BBQ island in San Diego?

Replacing pool deck material with pavers generally does not require a City of San Diego building permit, but adding a gas line for a BBQ island or fire pit does require a permit through a licensed plumber or C-36 contractor. HOA communities also typically require design review before work begins. Both the gas line and HOA review were completed as part of this project.

Can an HOA in Carmel Valley restrict a pool deck or outdoor kitchen project?

HOAs can require design review and impose standards on materials, colors, and finishes, but cannot prohibit projects that comply with California building codes. Gas line work and electrical connections require permitted trades regardless of HOA status. For this project, HOA design review was completed before construction began.

How do I maintain interlocking pavers around a pool?

Pool-area interlocking pavers with polymeric sand joints need periodic inspection for joint erosion from water and cleaning chemicals. Reapply polymeric sand if joints wash out. A light pressure wash (low PSI) keeps the surface clean without dislodging sand. Avoid harsh pool chemicals directly on the paver surface. The channel drain system helps prevent water pooling that can accelerate joint erosion.

How long does a pool deck and outdoor kitchen installation take in San Diego?

Pool deck and outdoor kitchen builds in San Diego depend heavily on pool subcontractor scheduling, HOA design review, and the number of trades that need to coordinate (hardscape, pool, gas, electrical, audio/video). Each project's schedule is unique to its scope and the order in which trades are sequenced.

What type of pavers work best around a pool deck in San Diego?

Large-format interlocking concrete pavers in a modular ashlar pattern are a practical choice for San Diego pool decks. Light-colored units reduce heat absorption, the interlocking system allows for some ground movement without cracking, and polymeric sand joints resist weed growth and wash-out from pool water. The surface can be cleaned with standard pool-area cleaners.
